After the Books

After Laura's baby sister Carrie grew up, she became a very famous newspaper woman in South Dakota.  She started a number of newspapers in the state, and then moved to the Black Hills to start another.  While there she met and married David Swanzea, and moved to this home, in Keystone, South Dakota, where he and his two orphaned children lived. I was very fortunate to take this picture, since the building has since burned down.  In this picture, it is being used as an art studio and shop.

Those of you who have read the final words written by Laura in the form of a book, know that she and Almanzo moved to the state of Missouri and built this house with their own hands.  It is called Rocky Ridge and is near the very small town of Mansfield.  I believe Laura did much of the construction, as Almanzo had been disabled by a stroke only a few years after their marriage.  This is now a museum, and there is a nearby gift shop and an additional room with museum articles contained there.  Visit if you can!
